Pond Habitat Creation
Ponds provide habitat for many species including great crested newts and water voles, as well as enhancing the habitat and providing feeding places for certain reptiles, birds, otters and bats.
Pond creation can be carried out has part of a mitigation strategy for great crested newts or as part of habitat enhancements.
It is often more ecologically beneficial to build a new pond rather than restore an existing one, as a new pond can be built in an area where it is easy to keep the water clean.
The area were the pond will be created should get plenty of sunlight but some shade during part of the day.
Different species benefit from different sizes and structures of ponds so Arbeco can recommend appropriate planting strategies for the pond, tailored to the site, and can offer advice on features that will enhance the pond for protected or notable species.
